In the news.... November, 3, 2020 Great News! During a Tuesday evening sitting of the Legislature, Bill 172 in relation to the FASD Education Act amendment, passed second reading! Even better, it passed unanimously. It is now referred to the standing committee on social policy and up to the committee to call committee hearings in order to then bring it back to the house for the third reading debate.
Great job to all involved this particular highlights to Kathleen Wynne for presenting this private member’s bill and for Sophie Kiwala who has been championing these efforts for a long time and got the legislative ball rolling with the help of our community.
Dec 14, 2017 - It's official!! - Ontario now recognizes "that the ninth day of the ninth month each year is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day. Sophie Kiwala, Ontario MPP for Kingston & the Islands presented her private member’s "motion on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day, stating that this comes "After many months of hard work, a myriad of meetings, conference calls, letters, and a gazillion tête-à-têtes with many members of our staff, various ministries, parent groups and beyond." Lots of cudos go to the families, caregivers, advocates, service providers and many more who supported Sophie in this action as well as to the elegance and eloquence of her speech and those of her legislative colleagues across the house.
